Before choosing a Pomeranian or Kleinspitz breeding pair, establish how both dogs are registered. An advert and a similar size do not answer that question. The process depends on the registration system and the club that will record the litter.

Read the registered names literally
FCI Standard 97 covers several German Spitz varieties: Kleinspitz is called Miniature, while the Pomeranian is Toy/Pomeranian. AKC lists the Pomeranian as a breed in its Toy Group. Similar everyday names therefore do not guarantee an identical classification.
Copy the full designation, including the variety and standard number. Keep a scan beside your notes: a single missing word can alter the meaning. Descriptions such as mini, bear-faced or doll-faced do not replace the registered designation.

A shared standard does not approve every pairing
FCI assigns the development of national breeding rules to its member organisations. Sharing a standard number is not permission to combine varieties. Do not apply one club's answer automatically to another country or registration system.
Do not settle this through a verbal agreement between owners. Send the proposed pair's documents to the club that will handle registration, particularly if one dog was imported or has previously changed its registered variety.
When the size and paperwork seem inconsistent
A measurement taken at home can prompt a question, but it should not lead to the owner relabelling the dog. Identify the actual discrepancy: a pedigree entry, an official measurement or a casual description used by the breeder.
Ask the club whether another assessment, measurement or document correction is needed. Avoid booking travel until the process is clear. Keep its written explanation with the records so you will not have to reconstruct the history at the next enquiry.
Check an imported partner separately
Request the original breed designation, registering organisation and ownership records. Ask which designation the receiving club will use when registering the litter. Do not rely solely on a translation of an advert or a kennel website heading.
If the overseas owner is used to another classification system, explain exactly which record your club needs. Sending a sample and a short list of questions beforehand is more useful than trying to reconcile the terminology on the day of mating.
What to settle before travelling
Put the details for both dogs in a short comparison table. Leave uncertain fields marked as unresolved and name the person who will confirm them. Matching varieties completes only this part of the review; health and other eligibility conditions remain separate questions.
- Exact registered name and variety of each dog.
- Pedigree number, identification and registered owner.
- Any earlier changes to the variety entry.
- Confirmation that the responsible club has reviewed the pair's records.
