How much to feed a Pomeranian: portions and body condition

Back to guide index
Nutrition4 minSources checked:

There is no single correct portion for a Spitz. Establish a suitable daily energy starting point, translate it into the amount of a particular food, then review the dog’s response. A package chart can help you start, but it cannot complete that assessment.

Weighing a Pomeranian's food portion on kitchen scales

Collect the information first

You need the exact food name, its calorie content, the dog’s current weight and a complete list of extras. Add age, neuter status, activity, illness and recent weight changes. A northern working dog and a companion Pomeranian need individual planning even when they eat the same brand.

This article adapts general canine nutrition principles for Spitz households. It does not offer a special calculation validated across every breed described as a Spitz.

Agree on an energy starting point

AAHA places energy calculations within an individual nutritional assessment. Equations and factors provide a starting estimate that needs review. Do not apply an ordinary healthy adult plan to a growing, ill, pregnant or nursing dog.

Ask which body weight the calculation uses and when to reassess it. Record the daily energy allowance and the circumstances behind it. When a product changes, this prevents the old gram amount from being transferred automatically to a food with a different energy density.

Convert calories into food weight

Divide the calories allocated to a food by the calories in one gram. For example, 360 kcal per 100 g equals 3.6 kcal per gram. An illustrative allocation of 180 kcal therefore corresponds to 50 g of that food.

This is arithmetic, not a recommendation to feed your dog 180 kcal. For mixed feeding, distribute the agreed energy between products before calculating their weights. Check the label units carefully: per kilogram, per 100 g, per can and per measuring cup are different quantities.

Assess condition beneath the coat

Body condition score describes fat condition. On the nine-point Merck scale, the ideal range is 4–5/9. Include the denominator because other scoring systems exist. Ask your veterinarian to demonstrate the assessment on your own dog.

A photograph of a fluffy outline is not enough to understand ribs and waist. During the appointment, ask where to look and how to feel gently. Use that same scoring system in subsequent notes; an unexplained number is difficult to compare over time.

Separate weight, fat and muscle

WSAVA treats body weight, body condition and muscle condition as distinct parts of nutritional assessment. A stable scale reading cannot describe every change in the body.

Keep a short record of date, weight, measurement conditions, appetite and altered activity. If the veterinarian identifies muscle loss, request a separate monitoring plan. Do not respond to every change in appearance by reducing food, particularly in an older dog or one recovering from illness. Bring the earlier notes to the next assessment.

Make the daily allocation visible

Weigh the day’s food and set aside the training portion in advance. Use kitchen scales suitable for the quantities involved; an extra handful is difficult to estimate in a bowl. Label the container and explain that rewards taken from it are already included.

At the end of the day, check family notes as well as the bowl. Separately purchased chews and snacks still belong in the record, even when they were given outdoors or by someone who did not serve the main meal.

Change the plan for a clear reason

Set a reassessment date instead of adjusting food every time the dog looks different. If the plan and actual feeding disagree, first check for different units, duplicate meals, a new product or unrecorded rewards.

Unexplained weight loss, a marked appetite change or illness warrants veterinary assessment. Bring the diary and label photographs. The next decision should explain the change rather than simply force the scale back to an old number without understanding why it moved.
