Pomeranian pregnancy week by week

A pregnancy calendar should tell you what to do next: attend an appointment, record an observation or contact the clinic. Build it around your dog's actual records, leaving uncertain dates clearly marked as uncertain.

An owner records observations in a planner beside a resting Pomeranian.

How long pregnancy lasts and which date to count from

Pregnancy averages about 63 days from ovulation. The window from the first mating is considerably wider: sperm can remain capable of fertilisation for several days, and eggs need further maturation after ovulation. The dogs’ meeting date is therefore not necessarily the start of embryonic development.

Record all matings, ovulation-monitoring results and the veterinarian’s estimated due date separately. If ovulation was not monitored, leave it unknown. Choosing a convenient date does not improve accuracy. Dating based on fetal measurements also has a margin of error.

Weeks one to three: no visible confirmation yet

Keep a calm, familiar routine and prevent further accidental matings until the season ends. There may be no outward changes. Appetite, nipple size and affection are unsuitable daily checks of whether breeding succeeded. Do not increase food simply because mating occurred.

Review medication, parasite prevention and planned examinations in advance. Do not stop essential treatment yourself, but tell the prescribing veterinarian that pregnancy is possible. A planned diagnostic appointment is more useful than a chart claiming an exact puppy size for every day.

Weeks four and five: confirmation and planning

Ultrasound is often performed during this period to confirm pregnancy and evaluate development. The day is chosen according to the reliability of the original dates. If examination was too early, a repeat appointment can be a normal diagnostic step rather than evidence of a problem.

Once pregnancy is confirmed, discuss diet and monitoring. Track actual food consumption and the mother’s condition. A growing abdomen cannot distinguish fetal growth from excess body fat or other causes; weight and body condition need to be considered together.

Weeks six and seven: increasing demands

Fetal growth accelerates and nutritional requirements rise. The expanding uterus can make large meals uncomfortable; several smaller meals of an appropriate complete food may help. This is not a reason to keep offering rich treats.

Choose gentle walks suited to the dog and weather. Avoid collisions, rough play and overheating. A tiny Pomeranian should not inherit a walking schedule written for a large, active dog. Contact with unfamiliar dogs is reduced during the final weeks.

Weeks eight and nine: prepare for delivery

Agree on a late fetal count, a whelping location and access to emergency care. Check who can drive to the clinic. The veterinarian should already know the expected litter size, previous caesareans and any complications.

Let the mother become familiar with the whelping area before contractions begin. Avoid scheduling a move, noisy visitors or a long journey in the final week. Temperature changes and nesting can inform observation but are not grounds for an owner to induce labour.

Do not let the calendar delay care

If the expected date approaches or passes without labour, contact the veterinarian under the agreed plan. Do not switch to counting from the last mating merely to justify extra waiting. When dates are uncertain, examining the mother and fetuses matters more than choosing one number.

Lethargy, pain, repeated vomiting, abnormal discharge or deterioration require attention regardless of the week. Green discharge before the first puppy warrants immediate contact with the clinic. Detailed stalled-labour criteria are covered in the separate dystocia guide.

What is worth recording

Examination dates, confirmed results, appetite, significant changes and prescriptions are sufficient. A useful diary line is date — observation — action — veterinary response. Keep original reports and images separately.

Give the same summary and daytime and emergency telephone numbers to your helper. “Scan booked” and “scan completed, next check in a week” are different entries. The calendar should support decisions without suggesting that every pregnancy must follow identical daily milestones.
