How to brush a Pomeranian at home

Back to guide index
Coat and everyday care4 minSources checked:

A Pomeranian's brushing session is finished when the areas prone to tangling have been checked, rather than when the outer coat looks fluffy. For Pomeranians and small German Spitz, separate brief inspections from more thorough grooming. Let coat condition and the dog's comfort guide the routine, rather than the amount of hair collected on a brush.

Understand the job

A double coat has outer guard hairs and a softer undercoat. Seasonal shedding may increase the work involved; a fixed schedule does not suit every dog throughout the year. Grooming aims to remove loose hair and prevent tangles while retaining healthy coat.

Ask a groomer to demonstrate loose undercoat and compacted hair on your own dog. A photograph of a brush cannot show how much pressure to use or when the tool starts pulling on skin.

Choose a manageable setup

Choose a brush and metal comb that suit the actual density of the coat. Ask for a demonstration instead of relying on a label saying the tool is for Pomeranians. A comb checks your work; it should not be dragged forcibly through a solid knot.

Use a nonslip surface where your dog can stand or lie comfortably. Keep tools within reach. Holding a dog beside a table edge while searching for equipment adds avoidable risk; working on the floor may be simpler at home.

Work through small areas

Begin with an accessible area on the side. Part the coat so you can see where the tool is going, and use short, gentle movements. Move on when the area can be checked comfortably with a comb. Resistance is a reason to investigate, not an instruction to pull harder.

Divide the body into zones and complete one or two at a time. You might check the sides and neck today, then the rear furnishings and tail tomorrow. This prevents repeatedly brushing the easy back while leaving difficult areas untouched.

Inspect friction points

Check behind the ears, under the front legs, around the groin and along the backs of the legs. Part the hair and look at the skin. A smooth outer surface can conceal tangles underneath.

Add the contact points of harnesses and clothing to your inspection. Remove visible plant debris after walks and take off wet clothing. If the same spot repeatedly tangles, discuss equipment fit and technique rather than repeatedly tackling the same knot.

Know when to stop

Dense mats close to skin are best handled professionally. Do not slide scissors underneath: folded skin and hair can be difficult to distinguish. Pain, weeping skin, wounds or marked redness warrant veterinary attention.

Pause if your dog turns away, stiffens or tries to leave. Repeated sensitivity in one location needs an explanation. A successful session need not cover the whole body; stopping calmly is more useful than turning a short task into a prolonged struggle.

Review the routine

Review the following week using three observations: whether new tangles develop, whether your dog accepts the brush comfortably, and whether you can inspect the skin. If mats form between sessions, shorten the interval or ask your groomer to reassess your tools.

After a salon visit, ask which areas needed extra work and request a demonstration for one of them. Record the date and any skin changes. A brief record helps distinguish a missed patch from a recurring problem despite careful grooming.
